Bethany Cartwright, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Cartwright is a physician scientist and pediatric endocrinologist specializing in pediatric obesity medicine. She earned her undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology with minors in Chemistry and English at Vanderbilt University. She is a graduate of the Medical Scientist Training Program at UT Southwestern where she earned both her medical degree and a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology. She then trained in the Pediatric Physician Scientist Training Program at UT Southwestern, where she completed residency in General Pediatrics and fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology. She is additionally certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine.

 

In her clinical practice, Dr. Cartwright specializes in the care of children with severe obesity, and she is the medical consultant on the multidisciplinary Adolescent Weight Loss Surgery Team at Children’s Health. As a scientist, Dr. Cartwright conducts translational research in the field of human adipose development, in order to better understand the biology behind childhood obesity and its health complications.

 

Dr. Cartwright also has an interest in medical education and advocacy regarding weight stigma and is dedicated to ensuring that all patients with larger bodies are treated with compassion, sensitivity, and respect. As a translational researcher, Dr. Cartwright stives not only to pursue new discoveries that will impact patients, but also to use scientific evidence to counteract common cultural misconceptions about obesity.
